Using Newsgroups to Market Your Business by Betty Ann Wilkins © 1999
Newsgroups are forums where anyone can post a message about
a specific topic. There are thousands of different newsgroups
covering just about any topic you can imagine.
Newsgroups are NOT intended for advertising. Newsgroups were
formed to read and post messages to help others interested in
the same topic. Some newsgroups have turned into advertising
forums but that was not there original intent.
In order to market your products or services in newsgroups
you have to post messages related to the topic of the forum
while using a clever signature (a footer at the end of your
post). This is the most effective way to advertise and market
when using newsgroups.
Most email programs allow you to create a signature file
which gets placed at the end of each message you send.
A good sig file is between 3 and 5 lines long and contains
your business name, your URL, your contact info and a few
words describing your business.
A signature is a very simple and effective way to advertise
for free which you can change at any time you wish. Do Not
overlook this form of powerful and free advertising. It is
a necessity when marketing in newsgroups but should also be
used in all your correspondence, especially in email campaigns.

When creating your signature file be sure to only give a
small amount of info - try to create enough curiosity to
cause people to request more info or visit your URL. Once
your signature file is completed use it just like you do
your business card.
Do remember that some newsgroups allow you to post direct
ads, while others only allow you to advertise via your
signature. Because of this it is very important to get a
feel for each newsgroup before posting to it. Lurk awhile
and read other posts before posting yourself and always
try to post useful messages. When you post useful items
and ask questions yourself the other newsgroup users get
to know you and trust you. Newsgroup marketing is free
and can help you build a good reputation along with getting
your own product or service more exposure.
A good source for information on Usenet Newsgroups is
Deja News at http://dejanews.com/ . You can search for
newsgroups and even post to them from there.
